Eracism Project – Global Debate 1
Posted by: Mrs. Lois Smethurst | December 19, 2009 | No Comment |The Eracism Project is a pilot Flat Classrooms’ project. It has been an amazing set of global debates using VoiceThread as a “simulated synchronous” environment. In this way we were able to debate against schools in the USA in our school time. This would have been impossible otherwise because of the time difference. Schools participated from all over the world in an series of elimination debates. After the first round it was decided to start a second strand of debates to give the teams who were eliminated a second chance in what was called theĀ “Convince Me Again” competition. The Berwick Lodge Team made it to the finals of the Convince Me Again debates. Shorecrest (FL, USA) who were our first opponents made it to the finals of the first strand.
The organisers behind the scenes have done an amazing amount of work to pull this all together. I know theĀ students at my school worked for hours over a number of weeks on their arguments and their regular teachers were very generous in allowing them to miss other classes when it came time to debate. The topic “Differences Make Me Stronger” is very complex and difficult for children in middle school but they have researched ideas and discussed the concepts with each other in a way you would expect of much more mature students.
